Bioco - Nortura's and Felleskjøpet's commitment to sustainability

Felleskjøpet and Nortura joined forces to develop and implement a new biorefinery process as a contribution to a more sustainable agriculture. Bioco is the result of this joint venture.

This partnership between two of the largest cooperatives in Norway is the result of a desire of both companies to be more sustainable, and to work towards a more circular bioeconomy.

Felleskjøpet wishes to reduce import of nutrients for their pet food production, and obtain access to unique hydrolyzed proteins and peptides, which would provide the opportunity to create unique products for pet food.

Nortura wishes to utilize their raw materials to the highest value possible, and take care of the rest raw materials, or plus products, from their production. To do this, their daughter company Norilia was established in 2010. Norilia identified the potential value creation of extracting proteins from poultry bones by using an innovative technology. Now this technology has been developed and implemented at Bioco AS.

Enzymatic hydrolysis is a known process that can give a highly digestible and nutritious protein product, depending on the raw material. Poultry bones, or off-cuts, are a very suitable raw material for this. The challenge has been to find an effective process to hydrolyze the raw materials that could be implemented industrially. This was done successfully at Bioco, by using continuous enzymatic hydrolysis.

Nortura has achieved a larger value creation of their poultry production. Norilia is responsible for sales and market development of all Bioco products, and contributes in this way to strengthening the position and value creation of Norwegian agriculture even further. Felleskjøpet now produces food products for dogs and cats that have a higher quality, and are made from local Norwegian ingredients.

These joint interests form the basis for the joint venture that is Bioco.

About Bioco

Bioco is a biotechnology and biorefinery company located at Hærland, Norway. The company is a result of considerable investments in the development of a more sustainable agriculture. Bioco has implemented continuous enzymatic hydrolysis for poultry in their biorefinery plant.

Bioco's process: continuous enzymatic hydrolysis

Bioco has implemented continuous enzymatic hydrolysis for the hydrolysis of poultry raw materials. This provides benefits for product quality compared to batch enzymatic hydrolysis, which is a great advantage for Bioco's customers.

The peptide advantage in pet food

Bioco's products have several advantageous properties regarding applications in pet food. The human grade hydrolyzed proteins and peptides from Bioco have a particularly high degree of hydrolysis. They therefore have several advantages: they contain high levels of peptides and free amino acids with an extremely high digestibility and are therefore particularly suited for animals with feed sensitivity or feed allergy and animals with need for extra proteins. All products from Bioco are human grade and produced in a BRC approved plant.

Proteins for performance and well-being

Proteins – everyone needs them, but some consumer groups cannot seem to get enough of them. Bioco offers hydrolyzed proteins and peptides that can provide great nutrition and flavor benefits in various food and beverage applications, where performance and well-being are targeted.
